A level successes for Derby Grammar
Derby Grammar School shares some of its pupils successes on results day:
Banging the Drum for Derby Grammar School
Jonathan H is hoping to emulate the success of a former Derby Grammar School pupil after gaining a highly coveted place studying jazz drumming at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
The talented 18-year-old musician, who also plays piano, violin and viola, counts former pupil Ed Richardson among his role models.
Ed went on to play drums for the likes of Noel Gallagher, Taylor Swift, Curtis Stigers and, currently, as house drummer at the famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London.
Jonathan, who far exceeded the two E Grades he needed to win his place at Birmingham Conservatoire, gaining A*, A* and B in Music, Music Technology and English Language respectively, said: “I’m really looking forward to Birmingham, where I’ll have more people around me who are interested in the same thing as me. To be able to meet up and play music as often as we like will be fantastic.
London Calling for James
Another of the school’s outgoing sixth formers, James G, is equally delighted to have achieved his first-choice place at Imperial College London, to study design engineering.
James needed to achieve minimum grades of A* and two A’s in Product Design, Maths and Physics – but he did so with flying colours, having been awarded an impressive three A* grades.
The keen guitarist wanted to study a degree that combined his aptitude for technical subjects with his love of the arts. After his four-year Integrated Masters degree course at Imperial, which includes a six-month industrial placement, he hopes to eventually work in product design for a renowned audio company like Bang & Olufsen, or perhaps start his own company in a similar field.
Record Results for Derby Grammar School
Star student Amogha R, who is also an accomplished musician, has matched three of his peers at Derby Grammar School with a full house of three A* grades.
Amogha achieved top marks in Biology, Chemistry and Music – and is planning to take a gap year and then go through Clearing and study medicine at university next year.
Amogha is hoping to work within the NHS during his gap year, as well as volunteering at London Road Community Hospital, Derby, or even teaching piano!
Outgoing head teacher Dr Ruth Norris said: “I am tremendously proud of the achievements of our Year 13 pupils.
“These superb A-Level grades have been secured against the odds of two academic years of Covid-19 disruption. They are a testament to the commitment, hard work, ingenuity and resilience of our pupils and staff alike.
“I wish our pupils all the best as they move on to take up some of the most competitive university places in the country and take their first steps towards successful careers.”
